Sur un plan métaphorique, des hannetons j’en attrape tout le temps. En pratique c’est plus rare. On en voit moins, des hannetons. Celui que j’ai attrapé l’autre jour était noir et chétif. Ceux d’autrefois étaient plus gros, plus bruns.

J’en parle comme de vieux amis car ils m’ont accompagné dans la vie depuis que j’ai découvert, puis mis en musique (j’avais dix-huit ans), la Ballade pour faire connaître mes occupations ordinaires de Georges Fourest. La voici, pour le plaisir, et dédiée à ceux qui, comme moi, ont longtemps cherché dans leur pucier les rimes d’une cantilène.

On voit des gens être épiciers
Avocats ou marchands de laine
Et l’on en voit qui sont huissiers
Ou bedeaux à la Madeleine
D’aucuns font de la porcelaine
Du cirage ou des feuilletons
D’autres vont pêcher la baleine

Quelques uns des écrivassiers
Doux toqués la morgue en est pleine
Cherchent la nuit dans leur pucier
Les rimes d’une cantilène
Pauvres gens comme dit Verlaine
C’est bien votre air que nous chantons
Va te brûler belle phalène

Souvent des philistins grossiers
Me rabâchent à perdre haleine
Il faut bien que vous embrassiez
Une carrière lon lon laine
Messieurs soyez préfets de l’Aisne
Mettez aux pois les canetons
Ou comprimez l’acétylène
