Dans Souvenirs de la maison des morts, Dostoïevski écrit que la meilleure définition qu’on puisse donner de l’homme, c’est que c’est un « être qui s’habitue à tout ».
Sans avoir de la vie une expérience comparable à la sienne (je me passe fort bien d’avoir passé quatre ans dans un bagne de Sibérie), je suis tout à fait de cet avis. J’ai d’ailleurs écrit la même chose, quasiment dans les mêmes termes, dans Ça arrive à tout le monde : « Enfin je m’habituais. On s’habitue à tout. J’étais un petit d’homme (…) »
Mais peut-être n’est-ce après tout qu’une réflexion banale, et que ça arrive à tout le monde de penser comme Dostoïevski.
